‘Accessibility Specialist’ Post by a Neurodivergent Teacher Goes Viral

Neurodiversity means the difference in the human brain, here with regards to learning in school. Recently a Facebook post is going viral that was written by an “Accessibility Specialist” (special education teacher), which was shared by Good Morning America as well.

McAlister Greiner Huynh is a teacher from North Carolina. On her Facebook page - ‘The Neurodivergent Teacher’ - she posted on 26 Oct that she would like to call herself ‘accessibility specialist’ rather than a special-ed teacher. She told GMA, "I teach a self-contained adapted curriculum elementary classroom, serving disabled students K-5. I am passionate about radical acceptance and disability pride."

Her post talked about how she is only making her education, classroom and herself accessible for her students’ very natural but divergent needs. She says there is nothing different or “special” about the education or learning she provides to her students. McAlister does not care about the term “Special” when used in education or for educators because she feels it is “only used as a term of othering.”

This initiative of McAlister has spoken to a lot of people within 12 days of times, her post has over 1400 shares and about 1000 likes. She is wearing a shirt in this picture with words ‘Accessibility Specialist’ printed on it; she also shares the way others can get the same done for them too.

This educator is surely trying to bring about a radical change in the mentality of the world, her kind of change starts from within. What a beautiful sentiment and an amazing initiative it is!
