Pre-teen children usually dream of playing all day and having a relaxed life, especially now, during the pandemic. But for Reem El-Khouly, a time well-spent is teaching her neighbouring kids.
This twelve-year-old girl from Atmidah, Egypt, has become a role model for many since she took up the responsibility of teaching children who could not continue their education during the lockdown.
Reem teaches English, Maths and Arabic to thirty odd students on the streets of her village. “I thought that instead of having them play in the street, I can teach them. I wake up in the morning, pray and I call them to start the classes,” she told NYP.
She began conducting classes with just a notebook and then shifted to a blackboard which was donated by the villagers after her class-strength started growing. In fact, on noticing her increasing popularity amongst the students and an even increasing class size, a local business has recently donated a whiteboard for her.
The students are extremely thankful and delighted with the way they get to learn with Reem. They say the classes are helping them remember what they have learnt during the school time and also grasp a lot of new concepts in an even better manner. Clearly, little Reem has a knack for teaching which is extremely good news since she wants to become a Math teacher when she grows up.
Even though Reem’s mother was not entirely happy with the idea of her daughter teaching on the streets in the beginning, she soon came on board when she saw the little girl receiving admiration from her pupils and the village at large.
