10YO Symbiosis International School Student Advises Parents on Parenting

At an age when children are are completely under the care and control of parents, this 10-year-old, a student of Symbiosis International School, has co-authored a book on parenting! Shiven Jain,  who reads a lot of books on parenting, wanted to write something from the perspective of kids and so he wrote Look Who is Talking.

What made him, a 10-year-old child, write a book on parenting? He explains, “I read a lot of parenting books and also see around how parents don't treat the children like they would like to be treated. That's when I decided to write it a child's perspective.”

Launched by Podar Publishing on the occasion of 67th Indian Republic Day, the book talks about constitutional values in simple language, which renders the book instrumental for parents in inculcating them in kids.

In order to understand the thought process of parents and what parenting in Mumbai is all about, Podar Institute of Education also conducted a survey among 1,600 parents of the city. The survey conducted ahead of  Jain’s book, showed that 62% have almost the same kind of parenting style. Swati Popat Vats, President, Podar Institute, said, “We weren't expecting them to know theoretical knowledge but tried to find out if the husband or wife were on the same page on how to deal with the child. In most cases, they took situations as they came but there is a need to put a thought to it and discuss.”

While 34% of the total respondents said that they learnt from their own upbringing … their parents served as their teachers, 15% completely imitate their parents without paying heed to the change in circumstances and time. Commenting on the same, Shiven said, “I see instances when parents hit there kids over small issues because that used to happen in the earlier days but that might not be write.”
